Why we are raising funds

Welcome to my personal fundraising page for Mental Health Connecticut. I have created this fundraising page to honor the life of Matthew Zomick who was very important to me. He struggled with bipolar and had severe ADHD. It was hard for him to have a normal life, but most of the time you could never tell. He was always a source of positive vibes and lived an extraordinary life.

He did a short stint at film school at UVM. While school wasn’t for him, he did learn some film fundamentals. After that he went west and lived the ski bum life in Taos, New Mexico, where he became an expert skier and also was a co-owner of a local pizza joint. From there he made his way to Los Angeles where he dabbled in the film industry, working as a stage hand and an extra. During this time, he allegedly hung out with Lindsay Lohan.

Eventually, he went to Europe and setup camp in Budapest, Hungary for a few years, where he started a dog walking business, played in a local lacrosse league, and was written up as a modern day expat beat poet. In 2016, he finally finished his bachelor’s degree, majoring in English and Psychology and graduating with honors from University of New Haven. Following graduation, he spent a year in China where he taught English and managed a music cafe.

Somewhere in the mix, he also became a certified dive master, and traveled to South America, Phillipines, and Israel. Last year, he achieved a lifelong aspiration of going to Cannes Film Festival. In the last couple of years, he resided in New Haven and was a stagehand at a the New Haven Music Hall. He started playing his saxophone from high school again and shared video of his solos on online.

We talked a couple of weeks ago. He was planning a new business venture focusing on premium coffee from Jamaica. These are just a few of his most excellent adventures. He was constantly full of ideas and energy.

Sadly, many of these highs were met with deep lows and the most recent peak has led to the worst kind of low. Our whole family is in shock and heartbroken. Too soon, he’s now gone on to the ultimate adventure in heaven and we all love and miss him terribly.

His experience taught me the importance of providing help and support to people affected by mental illness and their families. MHA is the nation’s leading community-based nonprofit dedicated to addressing the needs of those living with mental illness and promoting the overall mental health of all.

Join me in supporting real change. Let's support good in the world and make a difference. Help us increase understanding of mental health and wellness and promote recovery for people with mental health conditions.

Just a small donation will go a long way to helping me meet my goal for Mental Health Connecticut. Thank you so much for supporting me as I fundraise and pay tribute to the life of Matthew Zomick.
